Making Music

I had the privilege of attending the Gay Men’s Chorus of LA Holiday Concert this weekend.  Yes I know the rabbi enjoyed the Christmas music.  I enjoyed seeing my friends singing and I enjoyed the beauty of their artistry.  Even though it isn’t my religious milieu I can appreciate the delightful holiday music.  They peppered some traditional songs with many innovative presentations.

Remember this is an all volunteer effort.  Not a paid chorus but dedicated volunteers who love to sing.

I feel incredibly blessed that within the span of a month I got to enjoy both Vox Femina, LA women’s volunteer chorus and the Gay Men’s Chorus.  Eachconcert  was enriching and beautiful and reminds me that we need art in our lives.  Justice is importance. Spirituality too. But life is bleak without art, both visual art and music and drama.

In our day and time the arts are often an afterthought.  Certainly in funding. In our schools arts education is almost non-existent anymore.

One of the things I loved about the Gay Men’s Chorus is their Music Alive Music Education program that they underwrite. Some of the young people involved in their program were hosted by GMCLA at the concerts this weekend.

So visit their website and that of Vox Femina and support the beauty of art and music and education.
