Tonight we will light the first light of Chanukah. What is the light of Chanukah? Is it merely the reminder of the oil that wasn’t supposed to last but did? Is it the light of the miracle of the small band of Macabees beating the greatest army in the world? Is this first light the light of God’s renewed presence in the ancient Temple? Or perhaps the first light is is the light of God’s renewed presence in our lives?
As you light your own Chanukiah (a Chanukah menorah) and recite the brachot-the blessings think about what this first night of light is about for you. What is the first light? What light do you bring to the world?
Here are the Chanukah Blessings:
Blessed are You,
our God, Creator of time and space,
who enriches our lives with holiness,
commanding us to kinkle the Chanukah lights.
